I'm not really a fan of product endorsement but when I find something I absolutely LOVE, It's a natural reaction for me to want to share my excitement with everyone. My list isnt huge because I tend to sstock up on heaps of the same thing if I find something that fits my super fussy nature. Nevertheless, I ADORE all of this stuff for my active lifestyle and if i don't alread own it, it's on the hit list!
Booty Scrunch Tights - Celestial Bodiez
To say I LOVE these tights is an understatement! I came across this brand randomly on my Instagram feed one day and the stalk began right away. Designed in the USA by a woma named Celeste Bonin, they are a super comfy, super stretchy legging with speciality ruched stitching in the seam dead centre of the booty. Thus creating a "booty scrunch" effect (search #bootyscrunch on Insta to view the gallery of amazing effect these tights have on every single body shape they are put on)
The come in various cuts, colours and lengths and there's a cute little booty short range that is adorbs (but I'm not game enough to wear!)
In a nutshell, I'm so stoked with my first purchase that I'm about to place my second order because YES the cost of international shipping is MORE than worth it!
Ultra Boost Runners - Adidas
I've been running now for 3 years and never in that time have I run in anything better than the Adidas Ultra Boost, It is a combination of the boost technology, the upper prime knit fabric and Continental (car tyre manufacturer) rubber soles that make these my go to.
The Boost capsules are super spongy, cloud-like foam making them perfect for the shock absorption that I lacked in any prior shoe and helps my shin splints from getting any worse.
They also have this amazing way of "boosting" you forward thus increasing your average pace, hence the name. Without getting too tech-y and to put it into perspective, I heard a rumour that one of the marathon organisers in NYC wanted ultra boost banned from the competition claiming them to be "performance enhancers" thus creating an unfair advantage for those wearing them.
I've gone through 3 pairs of them already and recently managed to find myself a pair of the rare triple white releases that I literally wear every singe day to work as well as on my runs. The fact that they are super stylish also helps as they look sick with a pair of rolled up jeans as well.
If you try these and find you love them as much as I do, STOCK UP, every time Adidas release a new colour wave, they sell out in record time.
Lorna Jane Tops and Bras
LJ's crops and tops are my favourite amongst all the brands that I own basically because I like how you can showcase both your crop and your top in a way that seemingly is unique to the LJ brand. I'm all for wearing a crop top to the gym, especially one of hers with the beautiful detailing but sometimes, mostly following pasta days, I want that little bit of extra coverage. Layering my favourite top with one of her low back or cut out tanks lets me show off both and add some colour and texture to my outfit.
I don't have a favourite piece specifically, I do however find myself in store at least once a week trying on massive amounts and getting excited about how they'll mix in with my current crops and tops! Below, myself in my currently favoured LJ crop and tank ensemble and yes, they are the above mentioned tights and running shoes ;)
Apple Watch Series 2
Alright, I don't own this bad boy YET but I will. Namely because of how serious I've began to take my running these last few years. Usually I strap my iPhone 6 Plus to my arm and thread my earphones under my top to stop them flapping in my face while I run but given the size of the phone and how many times I've dropped it and smashed the screen mid run, an upgrade has been on my mind.
The new series 2 Apple watch comes equipped with one feature that causes a mind orgasm to all outdoor runners... GPS
What this means for me personally:
- I can run WITHOUT my phone, therefore eliminating the risk of smashing it YET again
- It syncs with my Nike run app, the only app I've ever used since I began running and stores over 1000km of data, something I am NOT willing to reset.
- It works with wireless bluetooth headphones and will eliminate my need to use those damned corded varieties threaded through my clothes! AND it syncs with my playlists from my phone.
- On top of all that, it boasts other non running related features such as being able to read texts, all of these other things are just the icing on the cake for me... they had me at GPS
I thought I'd start off my first blog post with an answer to a question I'm asked frequently. When it comes to cardio, which form is best for weight loss, HIIT or LISS? Well there is many an argument within the industry about which is best but the truth is both HIIT and LISS are effective in their own ways.
Stands for High Intensity Interval Training. Basically this involves short bursts of exercise at full exersion followed by a short break or less intense exercise recovery before another short burst. For example:
Sprint for 1 minute
Walk for 2 minutes (or rest completey)
Complete in intervals for 15-20 minutes
This is ONE basic example, there are thousands of ways you can put together a HIIT routine.
HIIT uses your anearobic system (the opposite of aerobic). This means your body's demand for oxygen exceeds the supply available and relies on energy sources that are stored in the muscles. As research suggests, HIIT is a little better for burning fat than LISS because when we train at this level of intensity, our bodies create the "After Burn" effect AKA: EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption) in which calories continue to burn at rest for up to 38 hours post exercise. And then there are some other benefits:
Stands for Low Intensity Steady State which is where you perform at a medium level exertion for an extended period of time. For example, a 45 minute jog at a consistent pace.
The most fat is burnt in this form within the "fat burning zone" which occurs when you work at around 60-65% of you maximum heart rate (MHR).
While there are some fat loss benefits from this form of cardio training, it does not have the same after burn effect of HIIT. That said, it's other benefits are still strong within it's own rights::
Here's a little personal comparison for you. When I first started my fitness journey I was running every day and averaging weekly distances of 25-40km in conjunction with weight training 3-4 times a week. I was slim and lean yes but I was suffering from repetitive stress injuries and I couldn't gain the level of muscle I wanted because my aerobic system was literally eating away at my muscle to fuel my runs. I had your typical runner's physique and had no clue why I couldn't get the shapely, muscular curves I so desperately wanted.
As I learned more, I transitioned a little bit away from running (LISS) and added HIIT to my routine and I very quickly gained 5kg of muscle. I still run 2-3 times a week but now I do it to keep my cardiovascular system conditioned and to zen out or stretch out my aching muscles. I do enjoy a long beach walk in the sun with a coffee the day after leg day!
I personally recommend a combination of HITT, LISS and weight training because, like all things in life, it's about balance. But when it comes to choosing what's right for you, it really just boils down to your preferences, current health status and your fitness goals.
And like always, if you need any further info or would like to discuss your fitness goals, I'm happy to help!
